CHRIS PELLY’S PRIORITIES
Asheville is a truly remarkable city. Our neighborhoods are diverse while our long-time residents and more recent arrivals enrich our local culture. This inspired my number one priority: Neighborhoods United. I want to work side-by-side with ALL of our communities. Neighborhoods having a strong, shared sense of their own identity is the first step towards improving our town.
This ‘Neighborhoods United’ focus guides my other priorities, too. My views on development are driven primarily by the needs of our residents. Developers who propose projects that make Asheville more livable for all of us will find me a staunch ally. But developers who skirt the rules and sidestep our ‘people first’ spirit will find me working for a compromise solution that’s more suited to the general good.
I am fully committed to advancing ALL of our childrens’ education. Having our children well-versed in the essentials is a requirement for both good communities and a functional democracy. It’s imperative that we make every effort to overcome the achievement gap in our public schools. According to studies, the cognitive skills of 4-year-olds who live below the poverty line are 18 months behind what is typical for their age group. Focus on children’s early years, including the home and family, is critical; high-quality infant and toddler care enhances a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Improved tutoring, mentoring and health screening are some the areas we can, and should, strengthen in order to further this cause. I support a comprehensive collaboration of early childhood service providers for 3- and 4-year-olds, and their families, to help close the achievement gap. As a member of City Council education will be one of my top priorities.
Without a good job and a healthy environment, we cannot sustain Asheville’s quality of life. These issues are important and they are also connected. Green-collar jobs and other emerging technologies offer advancement on an employment level and sustainability on environmental level. As your representative, I’ll do everything I can to promote living wage jobs, which help make Asheville a good place to live.
My advocacy of multi-modal transportation is also in line with my commitment to a more livable future for Asheville. This means more sidewalks, bike lanes and greenways connecting and UNITING our neighborhoods to each other and to downtown. Low-emission buses are a key ingredient. Buses with frequent, reliable, and in some cases both earlier and later schedules, will go a long way to get folks out of their cars and on mass transit.
Asheville must be a city that believes in and works for social justice for all. This means equal treatment for all of our citizens, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, economic standing, or beliefs. We must work together to make our city a safe, respectful and embracing environment, no matter our differences.
A vote for Chris Pelly means you’re choosing the one candidate who is the MOST committed to a vision of animated, engaged communities, all working together for a better Asheville–and has the proven skills needed to make that vision a reality.
